A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed today by the interested parties, namely the National ATLS, ATCN and PHTLS Centers, Health Units SA and Regeneration & Progress as project manager, regarding the implementation of programmes for training medical and nursing students, National Emergency Aid Center (EKAV) rescuers as well as doctors and surgeons, in trauma treatment.

With the exclusive financial support of Stavros Niarchos Foundation, a large number of medical and nursing students, doctors in training and rescuers will have the opportunity to receive, in Athens, Thessaloniki, Larisa, Alexandroupoli, Ioannina, Crete and Patras, training in trauma, which will enable them to offer to the public, through appropriate education and further specialization, health services of better quality with a view to ensuring a better life.

More specifically, the programmes are the following:

  • ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)

Training, involving theoretical knowledge and practice of technical skills as well as retraining, of senior medical students (6th year students and students pending graduation)  – (Student Course), in trauma treatment, with a view to their responding to moribund patients by taking specific organized and effective steps.

In addition to the Student Course, an Instructor Course will also be carried out for doctors who are holders of an ATLS certificate, offering both theoretical knowledge and practice of technical skills, in order for them to become ATLS instructors.

  • ATCN (Advanced Trauma for Nurses)

The specific programme is targeted at nurses and, like ATLS, which is divided into a Student Course and an Instructor Course, it will be carried out for senior nursing students and (1st year) nursing graduates, as well as for new ATCN instructors.

  • PHTLS (Prehospital Trauma Life Support)

The PHTLS – PreHospital Trauma Life Support education seminar relates to the prehospital treatment of trauma. The seminar is aimed essentially at assessment and treatment of injured patients, as well as at their appropriate evacuation to the Emergency Department.
The goal of PHTLS is to reduce the number of undeserved deaths and disabilities resulting from trauma. Implementing proper prehospital care can often make the difference between life and death or between a life with temporary or permanent disability, on the one hand, and a productive and flourishing one, on the other.  An Instructor Course will be carried out, also under this programme, for holders of a PHTLS certificate, offering both theoretical knowledge and practice of technical skills, in order for them to become PHTLS instructors.

  • Orthopedic Trauma Education Seminar for Surgical Nurses

The programme aims at training nurses involved in orthopedic trauma surgeries, since surgical trauma is, for the most part, of an orthopedic nature.

  • Scholarships – Training in trauma treatment in South Africa (Greek Programme)

Participation of doctors specializing in General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery in a world-renowned Trauma Training Center in South Africa.

  • Simulators: Laparoscopy Simulators – Arthroscopy Simulators – Education for trainees

Simulators, cadaveric preparations and virtual reality will be used, under this programme, to educate trainees without the risk of harming patients whereas, at the same time, trainees’ performance will be electronically recorded in an objective manner.

The education programmes are implemented with the exclusive financial support of Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
